NEW YORK—The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, the Simon and June Li Center for Global Journalism at the Columbia Journalism School, and the Center for Palestine Studies at Columbia University are sponsoring a screening tomorrow evening of “The Encampments,” followed by a conversation about the fight for free speech on campus. The event will take place at Columbia Journalism School and is open to Columbia University ID holders only.
The following can be attributed to Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.
“The film presents one important perspective on the largest student-protest movement since the Vietnam War. It is not the only perspective on these events, but by allowing the students to speak for themselves, the film helps viewers understand why the students were protesting and what they were hoping to achieve. These perspectives are part of an important conversation about why, how, and to what extent protest should be protected on campus—and about the most serious threats to protest rights and academic freedom right now. The Knight Institute has explored these and related questions through essays, research initiatives, a podcast, and litigation. This screening is an extension of that work.”
