Veena Dubal

Veena Dubal is general counsel at the American Association of University Professors and a professor of law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. A leading scholar of law, technology, and precarious workers, her research combines legal and empirical analysis to explore labor and inequality, examining the impact of digital technologies on workers’ lives, the interplay between law, work, and identity, and the role of law and lawyers in solidarity movements. She is completing a book manuscript presenting a theoretical reappraisal of how low-income immigrant and racial minority workers experience and respond to shifting technologies and regulatory regimes, drawing on a decade of ethnographic research on taxi and ride-hail regulations and worker organizing in San Francisco. Her research has been cited in legal decisions internationally, including by the California Supreme Court, and is regularly featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and CNN. She has been a residential fellow at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and has received numerous awards and grants, including the Fulbright. Dubal holds a B.A. from Stanford University and J.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
