Anthony D. Romero

Anthony D. Romero is the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union and its longest-serving leader since the organization’s founding. Under his leadership, the ACLU has advanced landmark work on national security, free speech, racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality, and criminal legal reform. Romero has been a driving force in efforts to close Guantánamo, end the federal death penalty, and secure historic victories for marriage equality and transgender rights.
